Search ranking and neutrality
ShelfTap has two separate surfaces and only one of them can be paid for. This page publishes exactly how each one is ordered.
How buyer search results are ordered
Buyer results are sorted by the key below and by nothing else. It is reproduced verbatim from the discovery pipeline. A lower value sorts first.
output.sort(key=lambda item: (
_evidence_tier(item), # 0 verified | 1 has URL | 2 has address or phone | 3 name only
-item["ranking_score"],
-item["score"],
-item["_outreach_sort"], # 0.95 * ranking_score + 0.05 * contact_score
item["_gemini_rank"],
item["name"].casefold(),
))
What each term means
- Evidence tier — whether the row carries verified evidence, a retrievable web identity, an offline anchor such as an address or phone number, or a name only.
- Ranking score — the evidence-weighted fit between the company and the product you searched for.
- Score — the published confidence value for the match.
- Outreach sort — 0.95 x ranking score + 0.05 x contact score. It only separates rows that are already identical on everything above it, and the contact score measures how reachable a company is, not whether anyone has paid.
- Model rank — the order the discovery model itself returned, used only as a further tie-break.
- Name — an alphabetical last resort, so the same search returns the same order twice.
Payment never affects search ranking
No term in the sort key above reads a plan, a subscription, an invoice, a verification tier or a promotion. There is no paid placement in buyer search results, no way to buy a higher position, and no way to pay to have another company ranked lower. Paying for a verified or promoted company profile changes where that profile appears in the supplier directory and nowhere else. If that ever changes, this page changes first.
Two surfaces, deliberately separate
- Buyer search results are ranked by evidence. They are produced for one search, they cannot be bought, and no company can pay to appear in them.
- The supplier directory is a listing surface. Companies holding a paid verification tier are ordered above companies that do not, every one of those listings is labelled Promoted, and the filter on the directory turns that ordering off.
How the supplier directory is ordered
Directory listings are placed in rank buckets before anything else is compared: paid VIP listings inside their promotion window, then Golden verified listings, then other verified listings, then registered profiles that have a website, a role and a published listing, then discovered profiles with published evidence, then everything else. Within a bucket the order is the directory boost and then the company name. This ordering is commercial, and it is labelled as such on every affected row.
0 verified VIP, inside its promotion window (promoted)
1 verified Golden (promoted)
2 verified, any other tier (promoted)
3 registered: website + role + published listing
4 discovered: published evidence or public contact
5 everything else
then: directory boost descending, then company name
